GRAPE (Vitis Vinífera)
The origin of the grape is in the Caucasus and central Asia, although today it is found almost everywhere in the world.
The grape is one of the first crops made by humans for consumption. There are known samples of seeds cultivated during the Neolithic period in archaeological sites of Switzerland, Italy and pharaonic tombs of ancient Egypt. Experts locate the origin of grape cultivation on the banks of the Caspian Sea, dispersing to the rest of Europe through trade in the Mediterranean. The development of the grape plantations would be extended by the Roman civilization, even introducing it in cold countries of the north of Europe, where they protected the fruits with glass and came to build heated greenhouses to protect the grapes, thus increasing the quality extraordinarily.
As with other products, it would be the Spaniards who brought the grapes to the American continent, spreading rapidly.
An important part of the world production is cultivated in Europe and within Europe the main producers are Spain, Italy and Greece. It is available throughout the year because European production is complemented by grapes from Peru, Chile, Argentina, South Africa and Australia.
